What is somatic coaching?
-
Embodiment
Somatic coaching is an embodied process. It works with emotions as physical experiences rather than ideas to analyze or problems to solve.
Emotions live in the body as matter. They show up as tightness, heat, pressure, heaviness, numbness, or movement. Embodiment means giving these sensations space and attention and staying with them long enough for something real to happen. This builds the capacity to be inside the body while emotion is present.
-
Titration
Somatic coaching prioritizes titration and nervous system regulation as the foundation for emotional work.
Rather than pushing for release or catharsis, we move at a pace your system can actually integrate. Titration allows emotions to surface without overwhelm. It creates enough stability that sensations can shift, soften, or change without forcing an outcome.
-
Attunement
Attunement is the quality of attention that makes this work possible.
My role is to hold a steady, responsive presence and to stay closely attuned to what is happening in your body in real time. I track subtle shifts in sensation, breath, and energy, and support you in staying connected to your experience as it unfolds.
You will never be told what you are feeling or where to go. Attunement creates a relational field where your body leads and your inner signals are respected.
-
Metabolization
Somatic coaching supports the metabolizing of emotions through the body.
When emotions are felt fully and with enough support, they’re free to flow. Sensations complete natural cycles of activation and settling. What once felt overwhelming or frozen can move, resolve, or reorganize.
Metabolizing emotion doesn’t mean fixing emotion. It’s allowing emotions to be processed so they no longer dominate or interrupt your system. Over time, this builds greater emotional range and trust in your body’s capacity to feel.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Somatic coaching is a way of working with the connection between your mind, body, emotions, and nervous system. Rather than relying only on talking about your experiences, we direct attention to what your body is communicating through sensations, impulses, tension, emotions, and patterns. Your body often carries information that your thinking mind hasn’t fully accessed yet.
-
Therapy often focuses on understanding things cognitively. Somatic coaching complements that work by bringing awareness to your bodily experience and giving your body the opportunity to complete any processes that are stuck.
Many clients work with a therapist and find that somatic coaching helps them integrate insights beyond their ability to cognitively understand.
-
Every session is different because we work with what’s most present for you that day.
A session may include:
Guided reflection and conversation
Body awareness exercises
Focusing on sensations, emotions, or internal experiences
Nervous system regulation practices
Gentle movement or breath (when appropriate)
Integration and practical takeaways
There is never a “right” way to experience a session.
-
People seek somatic coaching for many reasons, including:
Feeling disconnected from themselves
Anxiety or chronic stress
Emotional overwhelm
Self-criticism or perfectionism
Difficulty feeling emotions
Relationship patterns
Life transitions
Body image struggles
Burnout
Wanting to feel more present, grounded, and alive
You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit.
-
Research continues to grow showing that the body and nervous system play an important role in emotional wellbeing. Somatic approaches draw from neuroscience, physiology, trauma research, and psychology to support greater awareness, regulation, and integration.
While no single approach is a cure-all, many people find that combining cognitive understanding with embodied experience leads to deeper healing.
-
Not at all.
Somatic coaching is valuable for anyone who wants to better understand themselves, navigate stressors, deepen emotional awareness, or create lasting patterns of change.
-
That’s actually very common.
Many people begin somatic work feeling numb, disconnected, or unsure what they’re “supposed” to notice. We move slowly and without pressure.
Learning to notice your body’s signals is a skill that develops over time. -
Yes.
Many people come to somatic coaching because they can explain what they’re feeling intellectually but have difficulty actually experiencing or expressing those emotions. Working through the body can create new pathways for awareness that don’t rely on finding the perfect words.
-
Somatic coaching is a coaching service focused on personal growth, emotional awareness, and nervous system support. It is not psychotherapy, medical care, or a substitute for treatment from a licensed mental health or healthcare professional.
If appropriate, I’m happy to work alongside your therapist or other healthcare providers.
-
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.
Some people come for support around a specific challenge, while others choose ongoing sessions as part of their personal growth.
During our first few sessions, we’ll get a better sense of what feels most supportive for your goals. -
Not at all.
No prior experience is necessary. Everything is guided, and we’ll meet you where you are.
Curiosity is much more important than experience. -
My work blends somatic coaching with Somatic Breathwork, Focalizing, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Somatic EMDR-informed practices. Rather than trying to fix or override your emotions, we’ll cultivate a relationship with your inner experience that’s grounded in curiosity, compassion, and the wisdom of your body.
The goal isn’t simply to understand yourself differently but to experience yourself differently. Over time, many people find this creates greater connection between their thoughts, emotions, body, and lived experience.
-
Yes. My work is informed by Internal Family Systems (IFS), a framework that views us as having different “parts” of ourselves, each with its own emotions, beliefs, and protective strategies.
Rather than trying to get rid of difficult thoughts or emotions, we approach them with curiosity and compassion. Exploring your inner world in this way can help reduce internal conflict, increase self-understanding, and create more space for choice.
You don’t need any prior experience with IFS, and we use it only when it feels supportive for your goals.
-
My work is informed by Somatic EMDR principles, which integrate body awareness with approaches to processing difficult experiences. Rather than focusing only on thoughts or memories, this perspective recognizes that our bodies and nervous systems also hold important information.
When appropriate, I may incorporate elements inspired by Somatic EMDR such as tracking body sensations, resourcing, grounding, or bilateral stimulation to support regulation and integration.
While I draw from these principles, my coaching is not EMDR therapy or a substitute for treatment with a licensed mental health professional.
